Theragun Sports Massage Q&A

What is a Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle approach to bodywork. It focuses on the craniosacral system, including bones in the back of your skull and back, fascia (the connective tissue that covers organs and muscles), membranes, and cerebrospinal fluids.

The craniosacral system needs to be properly balanced so fluids can flow freely through your spine. But, certain factors like injury and stress can cause disruptions in your craniosacral system, leading to pain, discomfort, or other symptoms.

Craniosacral Therapy helps to release fascia and restore fluid flow, which ultimately helps relieve your symptoms and improves your sense of well-being.

When Might I Need Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral Therapy can be helpful for many different health and wellness needs, including:

  • Stress

  • Anxiety

  • Chronic pain

  • Chronic migraines

  • Regional pain syndromes like complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)

  • Bodywide pain syndromes like fibromyalgia

  • Multiple sclerosis

  • Occipital neuralgia

  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome

  • Post-concussion syndrome

  • Seizure disorder like epilepsy

  • Stroke recovery

  • Post-surgical recovery

  • Low immunity

A number of other conditions and issues may also respond to Craniosacral Therapy. If you’re struggling from pain or tension and a traditional massage is too much, this approach could be ideal  for you.

Before your session, your therapist will review your medical history to make sure you’re a good candidate for this type of therapy.

If you had a brain injury or any other condition affecting your brain and your physician hasn’t approved craniosacral therapy, you must wait until they release you to schedule your session.

What Does Craniosacral Feel Like?

Craniosacral Therapy is a feather-light pressure technique, using pressure no more than the weight of a nickel. You might barely feel it, but you will experience its powerful effects on your central nervous system.

Many people feel extremely relaxed and some people describe a feeling of warmth. You may even fall asleep during your craniosacral therapy sessions.

While you may get positive benefits after just the first session, craniosacral therapy often works best when you have a series of sessions. After each session, you can discuss results with your therapist so they can better calibrate your next session for your unique needs.
